Reinstating the Ban
December 19, 2011 -- A provision to reinstate the ban on federal funding for syringe exchange programs is included in the final FY12 appropriations package in Congress. The ban, which had been in place for decades, was lifted in 2009. Its reinstatement flies in the face of research showing syringe exchange to be one of the most effective HIV prevention tools available.
“It is deeply ironic that this budget bill will result in increased health care costs for the country in terms of new infections of HIV, hepatitis C and other blood-borne infections that are otherwise entirely avoidable,” said AIDS Action President & CEO Rebecca Haag. Read her statement in full >>

Rebecca Haag on TheAtlantic.com
Wednesday, December 7 -- AIDS Action President & CEO Rebecca Haag has a blog post on TheAtlanic.com, raising concerns about cutting government funding for HIV/AIDS when we've clearly shown that investing in prevention and care saves lives, reduces new infections, and significantly cuts down on long term healthcare spending.
From the post: "Over three decades, AIDS service organizations have built a sophisticated model of care for HIV, one of the most complicated -- and expensive -- chronic diseases confronting the healthcare system today. We still don't have a cure, but in life expectancy after a diagnosis of HIV has increased from 10.5 years in 1995 to 22.5 years in 2005. That is thanks to ever-improving drug treatments that target the virus more efficiently and with fewer side effects. But all the drugs in the world would not help without the social supports that have been put in place to ensure better health care outcomes." Read the post in full >>

30 Years of AIDS
Sunday, June 5th marked 30 years to the day that the first cases of AIDS were reported by the CDC. Back then, we knew alarmingly little about the illness that would become one of the deadliest epidemics in human history.
To reflect on the past 30 years and collect our hopes for the future, we’ve set up a 30 Years of AIDS tributes page. Check it out. You can share your thoughts and links to multimedia, like photos, songs, YouTube videos, and more. Let’s keep the conversation going!
